He was deputy commissioner for legal matters for the New York City Police Department from 1954 to 1956.
He was the Chief Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1961 to 1962 and 1962 to 1965.
His wife, Sally Broderick, stated after his death that the family had received criticism after they moved since people accused them of not really living in New York City.
He was confirmed by the United States Senate on September 23, 1976, and received his commission on October 4, 1976.
