Viola Clare Wingfield Powles was born on 8 January 1911, in Rye, Sussex.
Her parents were Isabel Grace Wingfield and Lewis Charles Powles.
In the winter of 1933 she visited her uncle, a high Court Judge, in Lahore in India.
