Vivian Joyce Smith MNZM (née Barrowman, born 15 September 1951) is a New Zealand chess player.

She is a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to chess, and holds the title of Woman FIDE Master (WFM).

[4] Her best result was at the 26th Chess Olympiad in Thessaloniki, Greece in 1984, when she scored 7/9 and won the bronze medal on board 3.

[5] Smith gained the WCM title for scoring 5.5/11 at the 36th Chess Olympiad in Calvia, Spain in 2004, and gained the WFM title for scoring 6.5/9 at the 38th Chess Olympiad in Dresden, Germany in 2008.

[2] In the 2013 Queen's Birthday Honours, Smith was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to chess.

Smith has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History, and worked as a secondary school teacher, a Human Resources Officer for Air New Zealand, and a chess coach in schools, before retiring to Mount Maunganui in 2010.
