Walter Saunders

[1] Walter Saunders Memorial Park along the York Beltline Trail between Dufferin Street and Times Road is named after him.

[3] He gained a reputation as "watchdog of the treasury" and an opponent of property tax increases, particularly due to their impact on senior citizens living on a fixed income.

[1] While serving as councillor for Ward 2, the township council voted Saunders in as reeve in January 1962 to complete the term of Frederick Charles Taylor, who had died in office.

[5] He began using an answering service a few weeks after becoming reeve because "cranks" and "crackpots" calling him at home at all hours of the night were robbing him of his sleep.

[6] A travel agent by profession, who had also worked as a printer, Saunders had run for reeve in previous general elections but had not been successful.
