Western Necropolis is a cemetery complex in Glasgow, Scotland located to the north of the city centre.
As well as the actual Western Necropolis cemetery established in 1882,[1] it is bordered by Lambhill Cemetery which opened in 1881,[1] St Kentigern's Cemetery (Roman Catholic) that opened in 1882,[1] and Glasgow (Garnethill) Hebrew Burial Ground founded in 1989.
[1] Of the four necropolises in Glasgow, the Western Necropolis is the only one with a crematorium on the grounds.
[1] Designed by James Chalmers in 1893 and opened in 1895, it was the first crematorium in Scotland.
The First World War graves are mainly grouped in Section P, with a group of Australian graves in Section N.[3] A memorial in the garden of rest erected by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission commemorates one serviceman of World War I and 72 Commonwealth service personnel of World War II who were cremated here.
