[2][3] A cousin, Margaret Morris, supported Gunn's studies at Guildford Grammar School, and he matriculated at Magdalen College, Oxford in 1778.
Taking a post as usher in a school in Wandsworth, he was persuaded to think of the Anglican ministry.
[5] Gunn was ordained in 1783, by Brownlow North, and became a curate at the parish of Chobham and Bisley.
He lost this post in 1792, the vicar objecting to his approach, and there was a secession from the Farnham church.
[11] Another impressed by Gunn was Jacob Kirkman Foster, who became a Cheshunt College tutor.
