William Edward Birkhimer (March 1, 1848 – June 10, 1914) was a United States Army brigadier general and lawyer received the Medal of Honor while a captain during the Philippine–American War.
[1] His career was long and varied, as he started as an Iowa private in the Union Army during the Civil War.
[2] Birkhimer was inducted as a private in the 4th Iowa Cavalry on March 21, 1864, and Mustered out of service August 8, 1865.
On September 1, 1866, he entered West Point as a cadet and on June 15, 1870, was Commissioned second lieutenant from United States Military Academy, 3rd Artillery Regiment.
