Wray was born in Philadelphia, and enlisted in the 23rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry in 1861.
[citation needed] After recovering, he fought as a sergeant in the 1st Veteran Reserve Corps.
[1] Wray was awarded the Medal of Honor on December 15, 1892 for his actions at Fort Stevens on July 12, 1864.

"[2] Wray died aged 74 on June 2, 1919, and was buried at Philadelphia Memorial Park.
