William Lee Apthorp

William Lee Apthorp (August 31, 1837 – January 24, 1879) was an American military leader, and Florida's first state surveyor.

He remained in Florida after the war and served as a surveyor, before moving to New Jersey and operating a dairy farm until his death.

[3] In the Union Army, he served as a captain of Company B, Second South Carolina Loyal Volunteers commanding African American soldiers.

[2] In August 1867, he was appointed chief clerk at the United States Surveyor General's office in Tallahassee, Florida.

[1][2] Ossian B. Hart (the future Florida Governor), chose Apthorp to be his private secretary.
