She regularly writes for The Globe and Mail, the Vancouver Sun, Quill & Quire, Canadian Business, and Western Living.
Gartner started her career as a newspaper and magazine journalist for a number of publications, including the Vancouver Sun, The Globe and Mail, Saturday Night, Quill & Quire, The Georgia Straight, Western Living and Canadian Business.
Gartner has been writer-in-residence at the University of British Columbia and a member of the faculty at Banff Centre's Writing Studios.

She also founded and directs Writers Adventure Camp in Whistler, British Columbia.
