Pulled out of the line at Atlanta 24 August 1864, the regiment was sent via Nashville to Springfield, Illinois, where 20 September 1864 it was mustered out.

Armed with 20 new Henry repeating rifles, the 27th Illinois Veteran Detachment distinguished itself at the Battles of Spring Hill, Franklin (Heaps was captured in the debacle of Wagner's Advance Line) and Nashville (Young was killed in the impromptu and successful IV Corps charge up Overton Hill).
