M1923 Thompson Submachineguns M1918 Browning Automatic Rifles Battle of Mangima Grand Canyon The 61st Field Artillery Regiment was a reserve unit of the Philippine Army, activated in August 1941 as part of the 61st Infantry Division, which was based in Panay.
The regiment was initially organized to serve as an artillery unit; however, it saw combat as infantry during World War II.
The regiment's artillery equipment was lost when the SS Corregidor, the ship transporting their guns, was sunk after hitting a landmine in Manila Bay.

Captain Gavino of Philippine Army was the initial commander, and USAFFE headquarters sent Major John Lewis along with four Lieutenants to help train in September.
In November 1941, Lieutenant Colonel Hiram Tarkington arrived to assumed command and Major Lewis slid as Executive Officer.
