Takahashi held a position as a Curator at the National Museum of Western Art, Japan from 1980 to 2006.

He served as a visiting fellow at the museum opening office of the Musée d'Orsay, Paris from 1984 to 1986, dispatched as part of the Overseas Researcher Program of the Ministry of Education, Japan.

He added the Maurice Joyant Collection, which houses over 250 lithographs and posters by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

Takahashi's father, Hikoaki, is a scholar of French literature and former Professor of the Education Faculty at Waseda University.
