It is the only charter township in the Upper Thumb region of Michigan.
As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 3,023 people, 1,112 households, and 806 families residing in the township.
There were 1,197 housing units at an average density of 34.6 per square mile (13.4/km2).
There were 1,112 households, out of which 33.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.7% were married couples living together, 9.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.5% were non-families.
24.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
