Ammophila azteca

Ammophila azteca is a species of thread-waisted wasp in the family Sphecidae.

After finishing digging its nest, it will close the tunnel by placing a pebble or other hard lump at the entrance.

This temporary closure involves a pebble or lump stuck halfway down the tunnel or further, after which the wasp will use its head to pack in soil above it.

When returning its prey back to the nest, Ammophila azteca flies about a meter off the ground.

The final closure of the nest is very similar to the temporary closures, but may differ in that the initial pebble is placed further down, it spends more time packing in the soil, and it holds a pebble while it packs in soil.
