In 2010, the Anglican Church of Rwanda bishops voted to create a new diocese in the northern parts of Kigali.
The first diocesan bishop was Onesphore Rwaje, who was simultaneously elected archbishop of Rwanda to succeed Emmanuel Kolini.
[1] In 2016, Rwaje and Rwandan First Lady Jeannette Kagame celebrated the 50th anniversary of Mothers' Union programs in an event in the diocese.
[2] In March 2018, Rwaje inaugurated the newly built, 1,000-seat Holy Trinity Cathedral in the Kibagabaga parish.
Later that year, Laurent Mbanda succeeded Rwaje both as primate and as bishop of Gasabo.
