It is one of the churches for the Balke parish which is part of the Toten prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Hamar.

The church has Romanesque, Norman and early Gothic style.

The nave is rectangular and the chancel has a semi-circular apse on its east end.

The artist community at Balke church has given names to the Balkeskolen.

A crucifix and a number of saint figures from the church can be found in a museum in Oslo.
