It was established in 1957 as part of the Simcoe County District School Board in southern Ontario.

Barrie North's improvisational team won Gold in 2009/2010 for the Canadian Improv Games (Toronto Region).

Barrie North offers a gifted program open to all students.

Some gifted courses include Math, Science, English, Art, Geography, Latin, and Civics and Careers.

This program was instated in September, 2021 Barrie North offers a co-op course in grade 11 and 12 that allows students to earn high school credits while completing a work placement in the community.
