Bishopstown

Bishopstown (Irish: Baile an Easpaig, meaning 'town of the Bishop')[1] is a suburb of Cork, located in the south west of the city.

It is made-up of the townlands of Ballineaspigbeg and Ballineaspigmore (sometimes spelled Ballinaspigmore),[2] and is located in the civil parish of St. Finbar's in the historical Barony of Cork.

Though it is sometimes suggested that the name of the area derives from an early 18th-century bishop who built his country residence there, the name can be reputedly traced back further and found in sources dating to the 16th century.

[4] As a suburban area, Bishopstown has a significant proportion of its population working in Cork City Centre.

[citation needed] Leisureworld Leisure Centre is located in the area,[6] as is Bishopstown Stadium (a training ground for Cork City F.C.
