The racial makeup of the township was 37.00% White, 55.57% African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 4.30% from other races, and 2.53% from two or more races.

There were 3,870 households, out of which 35.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.2% were married couples living together, 27.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.1% were non-families.

24.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
