[2][3] The park is located in a typical woodland savanna zone.
[4] It is notable for its large hippopotamus population in the Black Volta.
The endangered ursine colobus and a variety of antelopes and birds are also present.
[5] The park has been designated an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International because it supports significant populations of violet turacos, red-throated bee-eaters, bearded barbets, Senegal parrots, yellow-billed shrikes, Senegal eremomelas, oriole warblers, white-crowned robin-chats and Heuglin's masked weavers.
[6] Part of the park has been inundated by the reservoir of the Bui Dam, which was constructed from 2007 to 2013.
