As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 3,829 people, 1,275 households, and 1,105 families residing in the community.

10.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 2.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.

The Alabama Department of Youth Services formerly maintained the Chalkville Campus.
