Church of Our Lady of the Scapular of Mount Carmel

The Church of Our Lady of the Scapular of Mount Carmel was a former Roman Catholic parish church located at 341 East 28th Street between First and Second Avenues in the Kips Bay neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City.

[2][3][4] The parish's first masses were held on April 14, 1889 in Duke's Tobacco Factory at First Avenue and East 29th Street.

[3][5][6] It was the original location of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, which had been established in 1941 and was moved to Middletown, New York, in 1991.

Carmel to Middletown, NY, Our Lady of the Scapular and the priory were torn down in 1991 and replaced by a 16-story apartment building.

[8][9][10] The Middletown property was considered a more suitable and beautiful spot for prayer and reflection.
