Two of those divisions also form the Care Inspectorate, which inspects all health and welfare services and establishments that are recognised, licensed or subsidised by the department or any agency associated with it.

[2][3] The department is, amongst other things, responsible for the preparation and follow-up of public policy concerning welfare, public health and family matters, for the recognition, licensing, subsidising and inspection of various health and welfare services and establishments, and for the follow-up and counseling of offenders and victims of crime on behalf of the judiciary or other authorities.

Every policy area consists of a department, a strategic advisory council, a number of agencies and some other entities.
