Dexter is a town in Chaves County, New Mexico, United States.

[4] Dexter is located in south-central Chaves County approximately 2 miles (3 km) west of the Pecos River.

New Mexico State Road 2 passes through the town, leading northwest 17 miles (27 km) to Roswell, the county seat, and southeast 6 miles (10 km) to Hagerman.

There were 434 housing units at an average density of 590.8 per square mile (228.1/km2).

11.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 4.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
