From 2007 and 2012 he served as the director of United Front Work Department of CCP Central Committee.

In early years, Du served in FAW Car Co., Ltd in Changchun and Communist Youth League Jilin committee.

In December 2007, Du succeeded Liu Yandong as the director of United Front Work Department of CCP Central Committee.

In November 2012, he was elected to the Secretariat of the Chinese Communist Party, while continuing his term as Vice Chairman of the CPPCC.
