E. W. Cave

Eber Worthington Cave (July 14, 1831 – March 28, 1904) was a journalist, civic promoter, and politician in Texas.

He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and began working as a printer in New Jersey.

As editor of this newspaper, he opposed re-opening the African slave trade and supported Sam Houston in his effort to become Governor in the late 1850s.

He did later materially support the Confederacy and served as a Confederate officer with the rank of Major.

Major Cave died March 28, 1904, several days after falling from a streetcar, and was buried in Houston in Glenwood Cemetery.

In 1864 E.W. Cave sold what was later known as the Mrs. Sam Houston House to Margaret Lea Houston
