The station is owned by the Union Pacific Railroad and contains two enclosed shelters on two platforms, one on each side of the pair of tracks for each direction of travel.
[2] Elko was originally served by two train depots along two separate lines that ran through the downtown area.
[6] The federal government funded a $43.5 million project to relocate the railroads to a grade-separated corridor along the Humboldt River, which was also rechanneled.
The 2.8-mile (4.5 km) railroad corridor[7] was opened in October 1983 and the Amtrak station was relocated to serve the new tracks.
