The pavilion was designed to represent a 'bowl of diversity' and constructed with three-dimensional wooden grid made by combining traditional Japanese wooden framework with recent understanding of compressive strain[37] Expo 2015 was the first universal expo at which countries that didn't self-build were grouped by theme or supply chain rather than geography[52] into one of nine clusters.
