[1][2] During Operation Prairie on 17 August 1966 Company H, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines conducted a reconnaissance in force along Route 9 west of Cam Lộ.

The Marines moved forward but came under fire from a People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) bunker dug into Hill 252.
