From 1972 to 2015, he was the assistant to Lothar Ruppert at the Ruhr University in Bochum, he earned a doctorate in the Old Testament.
He had, until 1985, the Acting Chair, and then the full professorship for "Biblical Theology - Old Testament" at the University of Osnabrück.
From 1 May 1988 to his death, he was the professor of Old Testament Studies at the Theological Faculty of the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt.
