Although he received no formal training, Proud held his first solo exhibition at the age of sixteen.
[1] Though he is best known for his painting, he also gained significant attention for etchings, lithographs[2] and sculptural work.
[5] He has had his work consistently displayed in all state capitals since 1965.
[6] Proud was also the recipient of the Sydney Georges Art Prize, Melbourne 1976 (acquisition); La Trobe Valley Purchase Prize 1976; Coffs Harbour Art Purchase Prize 1977, George Crouch Golden Jubilee Invitation 1977, Ballarat; Darnell de Gruchy Purchase, Qld 1977; Gosford Art Prize in 1994.
