New facilities and workshops were built; henceforward, Giurgiu became a place for building as well as repairing ships.
[2] Following the Romanian Revolution that year, the shipyard entered a period of severe decline.
In 1996, when the Giurgiu Free Zone was established, the shipyard was divided and sold to investors, who used the workshops as storage spaces.
[1] The following month, a Romanian investor purchased the workshops, dry dock and shiplift.
Production restarted gradually; existing facilities were in poor shape, and modern equipment was purchased.
