The village lies just outside the Northumberland National Park, close to Hadrian's Wall.
Just to the north of the village is the 12th-century Thirlwall Castle, recently restored and opened to the public.
The Pennine Way, the UK's first National Trail, passes through Greenhead.
Thirlwall Castle (grid reference NY65946615) is a 12th-century castle on the bank of the Tipalt Burn close to the village of Greenhead and approximately 20 miles (32 km) west of Hexham.
The site is protected by Grade I listed building and Scheduled Ancient Monument status.
