[3] The Grote Stadskerk is the first, and the largest church of the Moravian congregation in Suriname.
[4] The building was enlarged several times during the 19th century, and reached its current size in 1847.
On the inside, the nave is 11 metres (36 ft) tall, with two levels of galleries along the walls.
On the day before the emancipation of slavery, 30 June 1863, the Grote Stadskerk was completely decorated in flowers[8] and was at the heart of the celebrations.
[4] At the 2012 census, the Moravian Church was the second largest Protestant denomination with 60,420 members.
