Guillaume d'Avançon

Guillaume d'Avançon de Saint-Marcel (1535–July 1600) was Archbishop of Embrun in France and a cardinal.

After studying literature in Grenoble he served as chamberlain to Pope Pius IV, until in 1560 Charles IX appointed him to the archbishopric of Embrun.

From the beginning of his episcopate, d'Avançon showed himself the firmest supporter of faith and public safety.

[2] The archbishop escaped into the Alps and took refuge in Piedmont, from where he sought asylum in Rome.
