Dr. Hannah Valantine is the Chief Officer for Scientific Workforce Diversity at the United States National Institutes of Health.
When her father was selected as the Gambian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, she and her family moved to London.
[1] She recalls that her decision to enter this field elicited skepticism from colleagues,[2] as only two other women cardiologists worked in the UK at the time.
[6] She was selected in 2010 as one of six recipients of NIH Pathfinder Awards, which were intended for the study of women's underrepresentation in biomedical faculty positions in the United States.
[10] This program reduces barriers to recruitment of cohorts of principal investigators from underrepresented groups in biomedical research such as people of color, individuals with disabilities, and women.
