He was the son of Robert Alexander Dalzell, 6th Earl of Carnwath and Andulusia Browne.
They had the following children together:[2] He was commissioned in 1820, in the service of the Bengal Artillery and gained the rank of Colonel in 1835.
In 1875, he inherited the titles of his brother, Arthur Alexander Dalzell, becoming Earl of Carnwath.
His titles were inherited by his nephew, Robert Harris Carnwath Dalzell.
