On 19 August 1873 he married Emily Sulivan Hippisley (1853–1889) and they had four children: Dalzell served with the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, rising to the rank of lieutenant-colonel.

Dalzell visited Sweden on two occasions, in 1895 and 1908, and there became acquainted with Swedish author, painter and cartoonist Albert Engström (1869–1940).

Engström wrote about their meetings in the short essay "Ett minne från England" (Swe., "A memory from England"), which was published in his book En bok till (Swe., Another Book, 1909).
