He served as the head football coach at Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute (VPI)—now known as Virginia Tech—from 1942 to 1945, compiling a record of 9–8–1.

McEver played football at VPI from 1925 to 1928 as part of the famed "Pony Express" backfield.
