[3] The church was designed by the architect Anthony Salvin and built between 1836 and 1838.
It was assigned a parish in 1843 and at the same time a burial ground was consecrated by the Bishop of Durham.
Restoration work was carried out in 1883 when the church was repaired, redecorated and reseated under the direction of the architect George Gordon Hoskins.
[5] The 3 manual organ was built by Thomas H. Harrison of Rochdale in 1868.
[6] It has been awarded a Grade II* listing by the British Institute of Organ Studies.
