After the expiration of the term of service in 1970, he filed a report on enrollment in the cadre of officers of the Soviet Army.

[2] In 1988 graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia.

On March 9, 2005, he was appointed commander of the troops of the Leningrad Military District.

BecameGeneral of the Army by decree of the President of the Russian Federation on December 27, 2005.

[3] In December 2007, he was elected a deputy to the 5th State Duma,[4] which had him retired from the Armed Forces.
