The racial makeup of the township was 92.77% White, 2.83% African American, 0.92% Native American, 0.55% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.67% from other races, and 1.22% from two or more races.

There were 2,505 households, out of which 29.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.7% were married couples living together, 11.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.1% were non-families.

31.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
