[1] Conte began his political career as an intern to State Senator James J.
He worked for Suffolk County Executive Michael LoGrande (1986–87) and served as a legislative aide to Assemblywoman Toni Rettaliata.
[3] He was re-elected many times, and remained in the Assembly until his death in 2012, sitting in the 187th, 188th, 189th, 190th, 191st, 192nd, 193rd, 194th, 195th, 196th, 197th, 198th and 199th New York State Legislatures.
In 2012, he chose not to seek another term in office in order to focus on treatment and recovery.
