James Maurice

James Maurice (November 7, 1814 – August 4, 1884) was an American lawyer and politician who served one term as a United States Representative from New York from 1853 to 1855.

Born in New York City, he attended Broad Street Academy and became a clerk in a law office at the age of twelve years.

He supported measures such as the direct election of senators, which was eventually realized with the 17th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

James Maurice was once the most prominent citizen of Queens County, advocating for Newtown.

Afterwards he resumed the practice of law, and declined the nomination as justice of the New York Supreme Court in 1865.
