James R. Lowery

He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1913 to 1921 sitting with the Conservative caucus in opposition, and later became a partner in the Home Oil Company.

[5] Lowery first attempted to enter provincial politics by running in the 1909 Alberta general election as a Conservative candidate in the Alexandra electoral district.

[7] His election was not without controversy as Lowery claimed to live in a number of communities including Oxville, Kitscoty and Lloydminster, and newspaper political cartoons and articles criticizing him as an "Edmonton town-lotter".

Lowery took a demotion to lieutenant to serve with the 49th Battalion in France and was wounded in the knee during the Battle of Vimy Ridge in 1917, and shot in the hand as he was carried off in a stretcher.

After his political career, Lowery focused on business activities in Lloydminster in real estate, and becoming president of the local Board of Trade.

[9] Lowery moved back to Edmonton to work as the Alberta agent for the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York.
