Jan Baptist Herregouts

Jan Baptist Herregouts[1] (c. 1640 – 25 November 1721) was a Flemish painter, etcher, printmaker and brewer.

Here David Herregouts had built a successful career as a painter thanks to the support of the local Catholic Church.

[3][4] Jan Baptist had three brothers who were painters: Hendrik Herregouts (Mechelen, 1633 – Antwerp, 1704) who had a peripatetic career as a painter including stays in Antwerp and Bruges, Willem Herregouts who emigrated to Amiens in France where he was known i.a.

[3][5] Jan Baptist likely first trained under his father and may have made a study tour to Italy.

[3] Jan Baptist is mainly known for his many altar pieces and religious works that he produced for the churches of Bruges.

An art historian has argued that his self-portrait and the portrait of his father (both in the Groeningemuseum) that are usually attributed to him are possibly the work of his brother Hendrik.
