He is a graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he was an all-state track star and an all-conference football player.
He was a starting wide receiver, and earlier in his career, a back-up to Canadian Football League legend Milt Stegall.
In 2013, he received the Sigma Delta Chi Award from the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) for excellence in journalism.
