Hughes has also held Fellowships in London University, including as a Senior Fellow at the London School of Economics and as Professor in Practice at LSE Ideas.
He went on to receive his master's degree from Lehigh University in Pennsylvania and his PhD from Pembroke College, Cambridge, in 1974 with a dissertation entitled Anglo-American relations and the formation of the United Nations organisation.
[1] Hughes was a career British diplomat for 35 years, serving primarily in Embassies in the Western hemisphere (Santiago, Washington DC, Caracas, Buenos Aires).
Hughes went on secondment to the private sector, working in BA Systems 1999-2000 and in Shell 2003–2004.
