Joseph Messer Clough (June 15, 1828 – May 7, 1919) was a Union Army lieutenant colonel during the American Civil War, who was appointed and confirmed to the grade of brevet brigadier general of volunteers in 1866.

[1] On April 26, 1861, he enlisted in the Union Army as a private with the 1st New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry, a 90-day regiment, and was soon appointed a lieutenant.

[2] On October 18, 1864, Clough became a lieutenant colonel with the 10th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry Regiment.

[1] On July 9, 1866, President Andrew Johnson nominated Clough for appointment to the grade of brevet brigadier general of volunteers, to rank from March 13, 1865, and the United States Senate confirmed the appointment on July 23, 1866.
